Cag. de Oro named ‘2014 Presidential Award for Child-Friendly Cities’ national finalist
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY is not only known as the country’s second
‘most competitive city’ today and the ‘Emerging City of Tomorrow’, but now also
proud itself as a ‘most child-friendly city’.
This, after Cagayan de Oro City was named as one of the national
finalists of the ‘2014 Presidential Award for Child-Friendly Municipalities and
Cities’ (highly-urbanized city category), along with Bacolod, Puerto Princesa
and Pasig. Davao City is the national awardee.
City Social Welfare and Development Officer Teddy Sabuga-a gladly
accepted the award from DSWD Secretary Corazon ‘Dinky’ Soliman, Justice
Secretary Leila de Lima and DILG Usec. Austere Panadero during awarding ceremonies held in Manila recently.
In turn, Sabuga-a presented the award to Mayor Moreno and City
Councilor Enrico Salcedo, who is the Chairman of the City Council for the
Protection and Welfare of Children, during Monday’s flagraising ceremony at
City Hall.
As a national finalist, the city got P50,000 cash incentive which
will be used as cash prizes for the winners of the soon-to-launched “2015
Search for Most Child-Friendly Barangay”. Bugo came out as the city’s ‘Most
Child-Friendly Barangay’ during its maiden edition in 2013.
Notable programs and services of the administration of Mayor
Moreno that geared towards for the children’s welfare, promotion and protection

World’s
first Rafthon event to be launched in CdeO
THE one of its kind test of endurance – a combination of race running, biking, and rafting – called Rafthon will add color and unique flavour on Cagayan de Oro City’s fiesta events this August.
Rafthon,
or rafting, marathon, and biking, was conceptualized and initiated by youth and
sports advocate Sean P. Moreno, who is also the Rafthon director.
Rafthon
aims to boost local tourism through
Cagayan de Oro City’s famous white water rafting adventure. The event is said
to be participated by 120 teams from the different cities around the
Philippines.
The
Rafthon will take place on August 29, serving as the fiesta’s culminating
activity. It has two categories, namely:
Category
1 – rafting the last 8 rapids of the Cagayan River (equivalent to 14 kms) +
4km/11km running
Category
2 – last 8 rapids + 10km running + 35km biking
The
young Moreno proudly claimed that Rafthon is a Filipino home-grown sport which
hopes to attract local and foreign tourists. (CDO Info)
